Changing fragrance is like changing an outfit for me, I do it regularly and it is very much dependent on my mood and my surroundings. It might not currently feel like it but we are still in Autumn and during this time I find myself moving away from ultra floral scents and going towards something a little bit more woody, with a slightly fresher element.
As we move closer to Christmas and Winter, I will swap to spicier, warmer scents but until we reach that point there are a couple of fragrances I love for Autumn. If you are looking for a scent to carry you through the next few months, one of these could be a good option for you.
Clean Reserve - Rain
If it weren't for Space NK, I would never have known about Clean Reserve as they are one of the very limited stockists of the brand in the UK. It is an American brand who are eco-conscious about the fragrances they create and the packaging is also made from sustainable items and is fully recyclable, how many brands can say that?
Clean is the actual name of the brand and Reserve the scent range, the reserve range is their slightly more luxury collection and the packaging embodies that. The perfume comes in a thick glass bottle which makes the perfume quite heavy and it is topped with this large wooden stopper which is the part that makes it look rustic but luxurious. The labeling is quite simple but that fits with the trend at the moment, simplicity is king.
The scent itself is very refreshing and the name 'Rain' really embodies the scent. I believe it was inspired by rainforests but for me this reminds me of the scent that occurs after there has been a hard rain and everything feels clean and revived, this scent is that bottled and I love it. I know during Autumn we see a lot of rain outside of our windows but I feel like we never get the chance to make the most of that scent and with this fragrance you can.
This scent is unisex, woody and it very much reminds me of Wood Sage and Sea Salt by Jo Malone London, this just has a little more to it and a bit more strength. Once I've sprayed Wood Sage and Sea Salt on myself I can barely smell it but I continue to get a waft of Rain throughout the day so I know it is still there. This fragrance does contain white flowers but it is not an overpowering aspect of the fragrance, in fact it only really adds a bit of softness. Overall the Vetiver is the overriding aspect of this scent with Bergamot adding a sharpness the moment you spray the scent.
I absolutely adore this scent and it is easily one of my go to fragrances just because it is so simple and elegant without being too overpowering or feminine. This scent on a wooly jumper is what Autumn is all about! The 100ml bottle is £82 which is not cheap and the 10ml travel size is £20, there is no way around it, this is an expensive product but all perfumes seem to be heading that way. I would recommend smelling this in a Space NK before committing yourself to this fragrance but I feel like most people would like this fragrance.
Jo Malone London - Fig & Lotus Flower
Speaking of Jo Malone London, I don't think it would be right for me not to include one of their fragrances. Traditionally I would have worn Wood Sage and Sea Salt or Blackberry and Bay during Autumn but this year they launched a new fragrance in September that quickly became a favourite, Fig & Lotus Flower.
When I first heard the name of this scent I automatically assumed I would not like it. I was very familiar with Wild Fig & Cassis back in the day and I knew it was a scent I would never wear, love the candle but not the scent. I assumed it would be the same with this scent but turns out I really like it. I received a scent card from the brand with their two new launches, opened it and I instantly liked this scent however as the card sat in my work notebook for the week, my notebook began to smell of the scent and it was honestly a joy to open the book even though it meant I was working so that meant I had to buy it.
I have now had this fragrance for a couple of months and it is the perfect floral without being too floral. The Lotus Flower is of course the heart note and is quite dominant within the scent but the fig perfectly balances that heady floral and adds a slightly sweeter, juicier aspect to the fragrance and then in the base note there is also a bit of Vetiver which seems to be a common ingredient within the scents I like for Autumn. I think its richy woody notes just call to me during this season.
This is a very full bodied fragrance and on the days I use it, I can definitely smell it throughout the day. This scent lingers but in a good way. I think this is a scent that you need to give a bit of time, at first the fig is a lot but as the flower comes through and then intertwines with the Vetiver you have a real mix of notes that come together to make the most gorgeous Autumn garden scent. When I wear this I feel like I am sat in a country estate near a pond watching all of the autumn leaves drop.
I feel like out of the three scents I have spoken about, this one would be the most divisive as it is such a mix of notes and it is quite strong but before you judge the scent on the name, give it a smell because it certainly surprised me. Annoyingly Jo Malone London appear to be continuing to price themselves out of the luxury fragrance market and into a realm of fragrance that not many people can afford. Their 30ml bottles are now £50 with their 100ml bottles being £100! When I first started buying Jo Malone their 100ml bottles were £80 and that was only around 5 years ago. The price increases are getting a bit much now but the brand still remains a firm favourite with my household.
P.S. I love the products but I do not agree with the treatment of John Boyega! He was exactly the type of brand ambassador they needed to appeal to a younger audience and the way they treated him will certainly go against the brand with an audience who would be the ones to keep the brand going.
Burberry - My Burberry
The final scent I want to talk about is one that has been an Autumn favourite for many years, My Burberry. In a blog post from 2016 I declared this my Autumn/Winter scent and nothing has changed, it is still perfect for this time of the year. The only issue this year is that I have recently finished a bottle so I do need to buy another one but I think I will wait for a discount.
Burberry created this fragrance to embody the iconic trench coat and once again it is supposed to have a similar freshness to it as rain. Just like the Clean Reserve scent but this is definitely more of a full bodied scent and by that I mean there is more to it. This is the most floral scent that I have included in this post today. There are so many different floral notes but has a mainly citrus notes in the top note whilst the base note has more florals which are supported by musk and patchouli.
My Burberry has the construction that I like within a floral fragrance. I always look for a citrus top note as it is refreshing and instantly brightening which you need when there are so many florals. The florals sort of contrast each other. There are a lot of white florals: Geranium, Gardenia and Fressia which are all very strong and quite classic but then this contrasts with both Rose and Damask Rose, the rose adds a sweetness. All of these florals are very much the flowers you would find in a classic English garden so this perfectly embodies the Trench Coat and the heritage of the brand.
As there are so many notes, this fragrance is really long lasting and it smells quite strong for a long time. When I wear some fragrances I have to spray it quite a few times for it to last for a while but with this I can spray it twice and that is enough for the day.
Sometimes it can come across a bit creepy when someone compliments you on the way you smell but at the same time it is one of the best compliments. I always worry that I smell so when I get a compliment on the way I smell I feel safe. When I wear My Burberry, I always get compliments on the way I smell which is why I will always have a bottle in my drawer.
As soon as December hits I will swap to wearing a more spicy fragrance which is probably going to be from Jo Malone London. I always wear Pomegranate Noir during December but I do also have half a bottle of Orange Bitters left from two years ago which I will also wear. These are my two festive fragrances but I will go back to my Autumn fragrances post Christmas.
Hopefully this post has given you a bit of inspiration if you are looking for a new fragrance this season. Let me know if there are any fragrances you think that I would like or that makes a great Autumn fragrance.
